Approximately once a year, Litsa and I take a break from grief support in order to give a little ‘State of WYG’ update. You might not know it, but we are more than just a super happening grief blog. It’s true! In addition to writing articles, we also create print grief resources, conduct workshops, record podcasts, create new outlets for coping, and run marathons <— one of those is a lie. Moving on, here is a run down of all that’s been going on.
The store:
Let’s get business out of the way first, here’s an update on the WYG Store.
We were extremely excited to add a few new print brochures to the store over the summer – Supporting a Grieving Child; Supporting a Grieving Teen; & Coping with Grief. We know it’s impossible to cover as much ground as one would like within the confines of a trifold brochure, which is why each brochure includes a link to a dedicated online resource page with relevant articles, information, and support resources.
Holiday Resources:
I hate to say it, but talk of the holidays will be here before we can say ‘trick-or-treat’. We have tons of free articles about coping with holidays and special days, but for those who want a print resource please keep our Practical Guide for Grieving During the Holidays in mind. We’ve had many people order this resource for themselves or for their family; as well as grief support organizations who have used it during holiday workshops or provided it as a free resource to the individuals and families they support. For organizations, we offer a quantity discount of $1.40/each and customization options on orders over 1,000.
Finally, just in time for the holidays I’m (only semi-sarcastically) thinking of selling these ‘Give me a break, I’m grieving’ coffee mugs. Who wants one?!?!
What’s Your Grief Online Book Club
We recently started an online grief book club through Facebook. We have about 200 members and we are just about to start discussion on our first book, The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. If you want to join in time for our next book, check out information on the book club here.
PhotoGrief
The PhotoGrief community is slowly growing. We’ve been floored by the amazing submissions we’ve received, but in order to keep the site going we need more people to share. If you are a griever who uses photography to cope with grief or if you work with grievers who use this as a tool, please reach out to us! To read more about PhotoGrief, head over to this post. Side note, we will be presenting at the National Bereavement Camp conference in November on using photography as a grief healing activity in the context of grief camp. If you would like similar information for your organization – reach out to us.
What’s Your Grief Podcast:
You can subscribe to, rate and review the What’s Your Grief Podcast in the following places:
I can’t believe it, but we have about 28 episodes now! We try and keep the episodes to about 20-30 minutes in length and so far we’ve covered a whole range of topics. You can listen to all of the podcasts here, but it’s better to subscribe because then you get an update when a new episode is up. Honestly, the podcast is kind of goofy and tech-people we are not, but we’ve loved being able to connect with our grief friends through this platform.
Speaking of Grief Friends:
Finally, we just want to say thank you to all of you. Most of our readers find their way to What’s Your Grief because they’ve been through, or are going through, something pretty awful. The way you all support us and your fellow grievers is inspirational and that is not hyperbole. When we started WYG, Litsa and I steeled ourselves for potentially mean or hurtful comments (because that’s just how comment sections tend to go) and in the three-ish years we’ve been at this we’ve seen almost nothing but grace and kindness.
Your ideas, feedback, and topic suggestions have been really helpful, so please keep them coming. We want you to come here for grief conversations, not lectures – so keep talking! Don’t forget, you can engage with the WYG community on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram as well.
Finally, I would be woefully remiss in not mentioning the readers who have made monetary donations in their loved one’s name.. We don’t have a budget, we basically run this site as a hobby, so I can assure you every little penny has mattered.
Thank you grief friends! We’re all okay!
